At the time I hired "Rutter" (As he was commonly known) as an "Army Times" pressman and before Gannett, I had a good feeling about him. You could just tell he had a determination to be the best at what he did and he never let me down. (Maybe once) He was very competitive in all sports which was good because Army Times was all about inter department sports competitiion. I seem to remember the Pressroom being unbeaten in softball. (I never hired for sports abilty alone.)
At Army Times we pioneered the use of printing color in Newspapers among other firsts and Gannett came to us to print their 1st USA Today and eventually bought the company. The young men and women that came together at the Army Times shared some special feelings and enthusiasm about work and family values. There was a determation as a group and team in and out of work to be the best at what we did and have some fun while doing it.
I consider myself fortunate to have crossed paths with these people and such a unique and special friend as Rutter.
We love you Buddy -
