Obituary for Joseph Whitmer McClure II

Joseph W. McClure LTC (Ret.) died on June 2, 2016 at age 92, sleeping peacefully. He was the son of his late father Joseph Whitmer McClure Sr., who died when he was six, leaving him to take care of his mother, Irene Whitmer McClure, and an ailing sister. Growing up with adversity during the great depression builds character that ultimately created the greatest generation ever that he so honorably exemplified during service in three wars. He was happily married to his late wife, Nancy Ellen for more than 50 years. He trained as a WWII B-52 bomber pilot. He was a MASH helicopter pilot in the Korean War and he was a pilot and a transportation logistics officer in Vietnam. He retired after 20 years to concentrate on his education at William and Marry in preparation of being Chief, US Army Logistics Evaluation Agency, New Cumberland, PA. Eventually he transferred to Fort Lee, VA where he was Chief, Tactical Wheel Requirements Management Office, retiring at age 62. He authored a McClure history book "Following the McClures - Donegal to Botetourt" that is the most comprehensive McClure genealogy book ever written and was reviewed by the American Historical Association. He is survived by his daughter, Sharon McClure Sweet and her husband Frank, and his son, Joe McClure and his wife Katie. His grandchildren are Cameron and Sam Sweet, and Jessie and Lauren McClure. Also surviving is Johanna, the wife of his half-brother, and her children, Karen and Walter Kayser. He was born and raised in the mountains of Virginia, conquered the world, and will lay in peace at Locust Bottom near his boyhood home in Glen Wilton. Godspeed! A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Paul Brokaw officiating. Interment at Locust Bottom Cemetery, Glen Wilton will follow immediately. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, from 10:00 AM until the time of service at Nicely Funeral Home.
