Richard Fulton "Dick" Nicely, age 86, of 403 Market Street, Iron Gate, Virginia died Saturday, December 24, 2011 at Friendship Health and Rehab Center in Roanoke. He was born June 4, 1925 in Alleghany County, Virginia to the late Daniel L. and Callie Harris Nicely. He served as an aviation mechanic in the United States Navy during World War II, and was a retired sheet metal worker for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. He enjoyed hunting. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Scruggs Nicely; two sons, Dana Richard Nicely and Craig Giles Nicely; three sisters, Lola Thomas, Sylvia Burgandine, and Wanda Maxine Nicely; a brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Ruth Nicely; and a brother-in-law, Lacy Stinnett. He is survived by two daughters, Wanda Knick and husband Ernie of Iron Gate, and Rebecca Fridley and husband Barry of Rich Patch, Covington; two sons, Stanley Nicely and wife JoAnn of Ridgeley, WV, and Gary Nicely and wife Carolyn of Iron Gate; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Nicely of Iron Gate; a sister, Elaine Stinnett of Vinton; sixteen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 11:00 AM in Locust Bottom Cemetery in Glen Wilton with Reverend Edith Snedegar and Reverend Lester Kennedy officiating. Interment will follow. There will be no formal visitation. However, the family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Autism Association. Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge is handling funeral arrangements.
