Obituary

Garland Roscoe Conner, age 87, of 209 Fork Farm Road, Iron Gate, VA died Friday, July 16, 2010 at Alleghany Regional Hospital, Low Moor. He was born August 18, 1922 in Alleghany County, Virginia, a son of the late Charles Alexander and Esther Dew Conner. He was a retired carman for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. He was a member of Iron Gate Baptist Church and also attended Iron Gate Community Church. Garland enjoyed farming and raising vegetables for his family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Loyal Conner, and two sisters, Opal Conner Wade and Fern Conner Nicely. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Balser Conner of Iron Gate; a daughter, Kathy Thompson and husband Raymond, Jr. of Eagle Rock; a brother, Hubert Conner and wife Pearl of Iron Gate; a sister-in-law, Shirley Conner of Kenova, WV; two grandchildren, Michael Thompson and wife Jeannie and Stacy Freeman and husband Eric; two great grandchildren, Karleigh Thompson and Maggie Thompson; and a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted on Monday at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Edith Snedegar officiating. Interment will follow in Locust Bottom Cemetery, Botetourt County. Pallbearers will be David Williams, Gary Nicely, Kirk Alderman, Alan Williams, Donald Conner, Johnny Kern, and Charlie Gibson. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM at Nicely Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 209 Fork Farm Road, Iron Gate.
